Celebrating 20 Years in Endodontics

This month, the entire country paused to reflect on the 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that shook us all in September 2001.  What also occurred in September 2001 was Dr Jacqueline Allen opening her own endodontic specialty practice in Phoenix, AZ.  Dr. Allen purchased the practice of Dr. Martin Goldman – his office was located at 19th Avenue & Tuckey Lane in Phoenix, AZ.

Over the years, Dr. Allen grew her business by acquiring the endodontic specialty offices of Dr. Charles L. Siroky and Dr. Joseph S. Dovgan.  In 2014, Dr. Susan Wood joined the practice and we began using the trade name “Phoenix Endodontic Group.”

“Over the last 20 years, I have been blessed to work with some of the best dentists in the Phoenix area”, said Dr. Allen.  “I am humbled by the confidence they place in me to take the very best care possible for their patients.”

For 20 years, the Phoenix Endodontic Group has been able to grow and prosper due to the hard work of all of the staff we have had on our team during this time.  A special mention goes to Suzie Salas who since 2007 has been Dr. Allen’s main assistant.  Additionally, since 2012, Kim Rowell has provided front office, administrative and PR support to our practice.  It takes a team effort to be able to provide the best in class service we are known for.

Our patients are the reason we are here in the first place.  Dr. Allen and her team are grateful for the opportunities we have had to meet and treat such wonderful people.  “My life has been enriched by meeting, treating and getting to know some amazing individuals”, said Dr. Allen.  “My patients mean the world to me.”  One of the biggest compliments Dr. Allen receives is when a patient self-refers themselves to our practice because of the care they received (and remember) on a prior visit.

Dentistry as a profession has changed significantly over the last 20 years.  Dr. Allen has made it a priority to always be on the technological cutting edge.  Use of CBCT’s, dental lasers and a huge investment in Continuing Education has helped Dr. Allen provide care using the latest technologies to go along with her “patient first” philosophy and approach.

We do not normally take the time to celebrate milestones, but all of us at Phoenix Endodontic Group feel that a 20- year anniversary is very special.  We want to thank everyone who has had a role in our success over the years:  our staff, patients, and referring partners alike.  We look forward to another 20 years of providing the best endodontic care that can be found anywhere.

With Gratitude At Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving, we give thanks for our wonderful staff, our referral providers and our patients!

We are thankful…

….to our patients for choosing Phoenix Endodontic Group for their endodontic needs. We value your patronage and appreciate your confidence in us.

….to our referral partner dental offices for choosing Phoenix Endodontic Group as their partner in patient dental care.

….and to our team members, their expertise and attention to detail is second to none.

Thank you for being part of the Phoenix Endodontic Group family!

We caught up with a few team members to find out what they are thankful for this year:

Kim: I am grateful for my health, my amazing son, my fabulous circle of people and my precious furry princess.

Dr Allen: I am thankful for my combined awesome family and grandkids. Thankful for the family by marriage on my husbands side-especially Marian Conroy. Thankfull for the bubbas.Thankful for all the kind and wonderful staff I have. Thankful for all the people that support AzMOM in various ways-especially the core group that has been with us from the very start in 2012. Thankful for my facebook group of friends that are in the unfortunate group and people that have lost children. They don’t know how much they have come to mean to me-even if I don’t really know them for any other reason.

Savannah: I am grateful for my body and my health. I am so fortunate that my body allows me to do all the things I enjoy and allows me to feel connected like hiking, my yoga practice, running, and dancing. I am grateful for the incredible support system in my life. Those that are family by blood and especially those who have become my soul family through the intervention of the universe. I am grateful for my fur baby patchouli. We have been through 5 moves and 8 years together. She is probably the one living being whom has seen me at my most authentic.I am so grateful for this past year in which I have experienced exponential growth and awareness.

The entire Phoenix Endodontic Group is counting our blessings this Thanksgiving, and we want to share our genuine appreciation for you. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you!

Great Qualities Your Endodontist Should Have

EndodontistWhen you are trying to invest in something important – a car, say – it’s not enough to think about any type of motorized vehicle with four wheels that will get you from Point A to Point B. To get the best value for your money, you’ll have to think about how you live your life, what monthly payment you can afford, the size of your garage, and many other factors.

That same sort of individualized thinking comes into play when you have an infected or injured tooth and need to see a dental professional to fix it. You most likely will need an endodontist, a dentist who is a specialist in saving natural teeth. But there’s more to finding a good endodontist than just looking for the word in a practice’s name. Here are just a few qualities you’ll want to look for as you “comparison shop” for endodontists, to find the best specialist to work on your mouth.

Great Qualities Your Endodontist Should Have

  1. Specialized training. Endodontists receive two to three additional years of schooling after dental school, but because the field changes so rapidly, a commitment to continuing education is a must.  Membership in an organization such as the American Association of Endodontists can indicate a practitioner is invested in remaining up to date on their education.
  2. A commitment to your comfort. Endodontists are experts at managing pain and discomfort, even for patients who have had challenges in this area in the past. A good endodontist will focus on your comfort level and seek to maintain or improve it throughout all procedures that are undertaken.
  3. Skill with current technologies. Technological breakthroughs have revolutionized root canal treatment in the past 30 years. An endodontist’s use of these tools can make your recovery from treatment quicker and help you experience less discomfort.
  4. A high experience level with endodontic procedures. General dentists perform, on average, two root canals per week; an endodontist may perform as many as 25. This translates into greater familiarity with different challenges and how to solve them.
  5. A wide network of professional colleagues. Collaborating with a network of general dentists, fellow endodontists and other dental specialists means your endodontist can accept and make referrals with ease if your case calls for one.

“As endodontists, we are committed to pursuing the education, collaboration and professional excellence it takes to properly care for our clients,” says Dr. Jacqueline S. Allen, a partner with the Phoenix Endodontic Group.

TDO Software

From September 14th – 16th, 2017 the entire staff of Phoenix Endodontic Group took time off to attend the 17th Annual TDO Users Meeting at the Paradise Point Resort in San Diego, CA.  Dr Jacqueline Allen was among the first clinicians to purchase TDO (The Digital Office) and has attended every Users Meeting since 2003.  Phoenix Endodontic Group uses the annual TDO Meeting to attend lectures and presentations on team building, new research and scientific advancements in the field of Endodontics as well as updates and enhancements to the software.

Dr Gary B. Carr is the founder of TDO Software – he started the company about 20 years ago and over that time has changed the way dental clinicians practice Endodontics – use of the surgical microscope as a standard of care being the most obvious.  In order to start TDO, Dr Carr assembled a group of endodontists that shared his commitment to excellence in the profession.  At the 2017 TDO Users Meeting in San Diego, Dr Carr was able to reassemble the original team that did the research and development for what became TDO. Included in this group of exceptional endodontists was Dr. Joseph Dovgan (Joey D).  Dr. Allen purchased Dr. Dovgan’s practice in Paradise Valley, AZ in 2008, and to this day we continue Dr. Dovgan’s commitment to excellence in the field of endodontics.  The meeting welcome reception was a very emotional time for Dr. Carr as he paid tribute to his colleagues, his wife Jan and his long-time dental assistant, Joy Haskins.

In a lighthearted moment, Dr Carr recalled that 17 years ago he took all of his retirement savings ($200,000) and purchased an electron microscope in order to conduct his research.  He said he told Jan after the fact, and instead of being mad about it she said “It’s ok you know what you are doing.”  The rest, as they say, is history.

Dr. Allen and Dr. Susan Wood are committed to continual training for staff on not only using TDO but also helping our team become stronger and more efficient.  TDO’s motto is “Best in Class” – that is what the Phoenix Endodontic Group aspires to be every day.

Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Endodontics

The use of broad-spectrum antibiotics in dentistry is common, on the rise, and problematic. Prescriptions are written too often when not indicated (for example, for symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, necrotic pulps, and localized acute apical abscesses), said the authors of an article who sought to recommend more judicious applications of antibiotics in endodontics.

In an article published January 16 in International Endodontic Journal, the European authors examined the current literature regarding the indications and use of antibiotics in dentistry with the aim of providing guidance to endodontists. The authors declared that dentists generally prescribe about 10% of antibiotics dispensed in primary care and “it is important not to underestimate the potential contribution of the dental profession to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria … .”

The authors examined antibiotic prophylaxis as an adjunct to endodontic therapies (irreversible pulpitis, acute apical periodontitis, and progressive infections) and for treatment of traumatic injuries to teeth (luxation injuries and replantation of avulsed tooth). They also examined the use of topical antibiotics in pulp capping, root canal treatments, regenerative endodontic procedures, and replantation of avulsed tooth.

They determined that antibiotics were to be avoided as adjuncts in favor of other approaches, specifically when treating symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, pulp necrosis, acute apical periodontitis, chronic apical abscess, and acute apical abscess with no systemic involvement.

They examined 5 types of traumatic injury. The only 1 for which antibiotic prophylaxis was indicated was replantation of avulsed teeth. In those cases, antibiotics should be prescribed for the shortest, most effective time and not as substitutes for endodontic treatment.

“The key to obtaining a successful result in an endodontic infection is the chemomechanical removal of the infecting agent from the root canal system as well as drainage of pus,” wrote the authors. “The indications for antibiotic administration should be considered very carefully and only as an adjunct to endodontic treatment, which is the major and indispensable procedure for obtaining the optimum outcome in lesions of endodontic origin.”

The authors concluded that endodontists can avoid overprescription of antibiotics by limiting them to instances in which infection is persistent, progressive, or systemic or when the patient is medically compromised in specific ways, including having infective endocarditis, immune system deficiencies, and certain prosthetics. The authors recommended the use of certain antibiotics. “Although penicillin VK, possibly combined with metronidazole to cover anaerobic strains, is still effective in most cases, amoxicillin (alone or together with clavulanic acid) is recommended because of better absorption and lower risk of side effects,” they wrote. “In case of confirmed penicillin allergy, lincosamides, such as clindamycin, are the drug of choice.”

Rules for Today’s Workplace

Root Canals in ScottsdaleYou would think that the business of treating teeth with Root Canals in Scottsdale, Phoenix and Paradise Valley is boring business – I am here to tell you it is not. However, the workplace as we all used to know it has changed dramatically. This has to do mostly with changes in technology and the tools we use today to communicate with each other (internal), and with our patients and referring dentist offices (external).

Indeed the world has changed and rules that used to guide worker behavior and habits may no longer apply. Compared to today’s workplace, it feels like I began my business career at a time when “dinosaurs roamed the earth.” Contacting your co-workers wasn’t always just sending an Instant Message. Back in the day you had to be a little more creative.

1) Smoke Signals: Back when bartering was the foremost form of commerce, telling everyone that you had some hides to trade was as easy as sending a plume of smoke into the sky.
2) Morse Code: Samuel Morse brought texting to the 1830’s using dots and dashes, making it possible to ask your staff to”–..-/ -.-…–..”* without leaving your chair!
3) Long-Distance Calls: During the 1960’s, international calls would cost about $3.00 per minute – the equivalent of $25.00 today.
* Get my Coffee

Even in the stodgy old profession of dentistry, social media has forever changed the way business is done and how people communicate. If you are in pain and you need a root canal in Scottsdale, chances are you just type “Root Canal Scottsdale” into Google. Once you have found the name Phoenix Endodontic Group first in the search, you then access our web page and Facebook page. I am pretty sure that is how it is done today.

Mobile devices allow dental office staff to be more efficient and to look at information on their office in real time. This creates a challenge – understanding where the line is between work and personal as it relates to use of your own mobile device at work.

Here are 3 tips regarding social media/texting for employees in today’s workplace:

1. Put Family and Friends on Hold: Taking a few moments for personal calls and texts is ok as long as you keep it brief. Tell family members your hours so they know when they’ll hear back from you.
2. Friend request the Company, NOT your boss: Befriending coworkers and your boss on social media is a bad idea – you don’t want to mix work and play. That said, sharing company content online is a nice way to promote your company.
3. Texting at work is OK: Nowadays you are expected to be easily accessible which means email, messaging and even texting are all appropriate forms of workplace communication within office hours.

At Phoenix Endodontic Group, our staff understands that communication in our personal relationships and work relationships are constantly evolving and it’s important to be able to adapt in order to have a good work/life balance.
