This week’s blog allows us to become acquainted with the newest addition to our team of Phoenix endodontists. Dr. Susan Wood comes to us with a wealth of professional and charitable experience and shares a bit about her pursuit of endodontics.
Q: What sparked your interest in Endodontics?
A: I became interested in endodontics in my second year of dental school. I found the idea of working in such a confined space challenging and exciting. Also, helping people feel better again after a toothache motivated me as well, Dr. Wood says. An illustration of her passion for helping people is her work with CO Mission of Mercy in the past, helping underprivileged patients obtain quality dental and endodontic care.
Q: How can patients easily keep their teeth healthy?
A: Brush, floss, follow a healthy diet, and have regular check-ups at your general dentist’s office, Dr. Wood advises. Should your dentist spot any developing problems such as root canal issues, ask for a referral to your Phoenix endodontist.
Q: Can you describe an interesting case you’ve had?
A: Dr. Wood recounts a particularly significant case: One of the most important aspects of an endodontist’s job is proper diagnosis. I once had a case of swelling in the mouth and it was sent to me to diagnose the cause. It turned out that it wasn’t a tooth at all, but a case of lymphoma that presented in the oral cavity. In this instance, not only a tooth was saved, but a life as well!
Q: What are you most excited about for the future of Endodontics?
A: Regenerative endodontics (where we can regenerate nerve-like tissue from the necrotic dental pulp) is very exciting, Dr. Wood explains. As technology advances, so do treatment methods and preventive care.
Q: What is the most rewarding experience you’ve had in your career?
A: Dr. Wood answers, Besides helping to get the patient the proper treatment in the case I mentioned above, it is the ability to help people save their natural teeth for a lifetime.
